The facts you need to know about IP dust and waterproof test

Source : Yk Testing Time:2022-11-12 View:

Do you know what the IP protection level of your product is? If yes, do you know what the grade code represents?

IP protection grade refers to the grade assigned to the product or enclosure, indicating its inlet protection grade or IP. This is the extent to which the enclosure protects against the entry of foreign objects (such as fingers, debris, dust, tools, etc.). The IP protection level test also determines the product's safety against moisture (including water, humidity, rain, snow, etc.).

The IP protection grade follows the following standard format: IPXX. "X" indicates the number related to the given coding scheme.

Understand IP protection level

The first number (in this case, the first X) is the protection level to prevent foreign objects from entering. Its range is 0 to 6. 0 is the lowest and 6 is the highest protection amount.

The second number is the degree of protection against moisture ingress. It ranges from 0 to 8. Similarly, 0 is the lowest protection amount and 8 is the highest.

Note that any X can replace the number "0".

First number of IP protection class

As we have seen, the first number represents the protection of solid objects. The following is the meaning of each number:

IP0 or IPX not evaluated

IP1 - Objects with diameter less than or equal to 50.0 mm

IP2 - Objects with diameter less than or equal to 12.5 mm

IP3 - Objects with diameter less than or equal to 2.5 mm

IP4 - Objects with a diameter less than or equal to 1.0 mm

IP5 dustproof

IP6 dustproof

The second number of IP protection grade

Recall that the second number represents moisture resistance. The following is the meaning of each number:

IP0 or IPX not evaluated

IP1 - Drip: vertical

IP2 - Drip: 15 degree tilt

IP3 - Water spray

IP4 - Water sprinkling

IP5 - jet water

IP6 - strong jet water

IP7 - Temporary immersion

IP8 - continuous immersion

IP protection grade system in practice

A few examples may help you understand how IP coding systems work in real life. The following are some of the many possible combinations of IP degrees of protection. Remember that "X" and "0" have the same meaning:

IP13 - This product can prevent solid foreign matters with a diameter of less than or equal to 50 mm from entering, and can prevent moisture from even spraying water.

IP52 - This product can prevent dust, moisture and water dripping.

IP65 – This product is dustproof and not affected by moisture and sprayed water.

IPX1 - This product has not been evaluated as a solid foreign object, but it can prevent moisture from dripping vertically.

IP4X - This product can prevent solid foreign matters with a diameter of 1.0 mm from entering, but it has not been evaluated for moisture resistance.

Another thing to remember is that a product with an "X" or an "O" -- in other words, a product that has not been evaluated -- can mean a lot. This may mean a product that meets the requirements but is not tested. Or it may mean that the product does not meet the test requirements. Often, this is an unknown problem for products that have never intended to comply with a particular type of test.
